The Gospel reading from St. John for the Fifth Sunday of Easter is short but profound. It is Christ’s New Commandment.
I give you a new commandment: love one another.
As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
This is how all will know that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another.”

Each outline is a different take on Christ’s command that we love one another the way that he has love us. As Our Lord said elsewhere in the Gospel of John, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friend.”
This was not an original saying of Our Lord: the ancient Greeks said it centuries before and everyone has always know it to be true. However, Christ did not just say it; rather, he did it for all his billions of friends.
